On June 27, 1859, Mildred J. Hill, composer of the "Happy Birthday to You" song melody, was born. She was a school teacher and an authority on Negro spirituals. In 1893, Mildred composed the song's melody and her sister, Dr. Patty Smith Hill, also a teacher, wrote the original lyrics as a classroom greeting titled "Good Morning to All." It was first published in the book Song Stories for the Sunday School. The lyrics are:

Good morning to you
Good morning to you
Good morning, dear children
Good morning to all.

The lyrics were amended to "happy birthday to you" in 1924. The song titled "Happy Birthday to You" was first copyrighted in 1935; in 1988, the rights were sold to Warner Communications. Mildred Hill died in 1916, Patty in 1946. It is believed that in their life-times the Hill sisters earned very little money for the song, which generates about $3 million in royalties and licensing revenue annually! Along with "Auld Lang Syne" and "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow" it is reportedly one of the three most popular songs in the English Language. Now, 114 years old, "Happy Birthday to You" is sung somewhere in the world every minute of the day.
